Rail Cargo Hungaria has shifted Ukrainian steel wire imports from road to rail

Ózd Steel Works also uses steel wire purchased from Ukraine for the production of bundled wire coil.

The imported raw material, which arrives on wide-gauge trains via Záhony to Fényeslitke, was previously loaded onto trucks and transported by road to Ózd some 180 kilometres away. During their journey, the trucks, carrying the goods with a heavy axle load and generating considerable noise, passed through dozens of municipalities in three counties and caused significant environmental pollution.

Rail Cargo Hungaria’s (RCH) environmentally friendly single wagonload transport solution offered a realistic alternative to road transport. To ensure its feasibility, RCH developed a unique technology for transloading and securely fastening goods arriving in wide-gauge trains onto the domestic standard-gauge wagons. RCH have implemented a loading method that removed the obstacles to transporting the coils by rail.

Through the single wagonload transport solution, the locomotive of the market-leading rail freight company forwards the loaded wagons to the nearest railway node, where they are sorted into an express train and continue their journey to the Miskolc marshalling yard. From there, the wagons are taken to Ózd Center station by a service freight train. By forwarding the 250-300 tons of steel wire arriving in each Ukrainian train by rail, RCH eliminates the environmental pollution of around 20 trucks.

The maintenance of single wagonload transport is made possible by state aid. This service, which is essential for the national economy, is increasingly in demand by Hungarian industrial companies. 2024 saw an almost 16% increase in the volume of goods transported by means of this technology on the previous year. The rail transport of 4 million tons of goods in the first 10 months of the year reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 65 thousand tons. The five-year state aid scheme will expire at the end of 2025 and its extension for the next five-year cycle is essential.
